What should I wear for my maternity session? This is something that many expecting mamas wonder once they book a session (or even before!). You can find a million opinions and advice all over the internet these days...and none of them are right or wrong! I will share my advice to help you plan out what to wear for your session. The way I have broken out this post is in two parts: 1. general suggestions 2. pictures with specific reasons why these outfits worked so well for my clients. Also, feel free to check out my Instagram and Pinterest for other inspiration!

Feel Beautiful

Pick an outfit (or outfits) that makes you feel beautiful! This is the number one, most important piece of advice I can give! It's also important to be comfortable and that the outfits feels authentic to you. If you are someone who loves hats, wear one! Jewelry, absolutely. Whatever makes you feel good!

Stay Neutral

Generally I suggest wearing neutral colors (e.g. stay away from fluorescent colors, bold patterns, etc.). This ensures you and your baby bump are the focus of the images. Have your significant other wear complimentary colors, but please do not wear the same thing. I personally like warmer colors like browns/tans, mustard, rust, burnt orange, pinks, ivory, black, and green (even though it is not technically a warmer tone!). Warmer tones look better with my editing style and many of my favorite locations - the desert, open fields. Cooler colors of course work too and look especially nice with greenery and in the city.

Think About Your Style

Are you a little bit hipster? athletic? classic? boho? casual? dressy? Think about the general style you want for your session and that can help guide the outfits you select. Don't like dresses? That's ok! I have seen some really cute maternity session with overalls.

Procrastination Is Not Your Friend

Plan ahead rather than waiting until the last minute to finalize outfits. Particularly for maternity sessions, it can be more difficult to find that perfect outfit.

Leverage Me!

For my clients, I am here to be as hands-on or hands-off as you want! Want to send me images of the outfits you are considering? Yes! Want me to send you links to outfits I am loving from some affordable places? Sure will! You already super stylish and don't need my help? You do you!

In the session above, these expecting parents opted for a neutral color palette that worked perfectly with the desert. The hat was a perfect accessory to add a little more pop to the images.

In the session above, mom had a vision. She wanted to have a bohemian, 70's vibe. She obviously nailed it! Her and her whole family had prints that complimented each other very well and there is a clear color palette that was planned with the aspen trees up in Flagstaff.

In this last session, the dress was beautiful, simple, with the right amount of detail. Her hubby wore a color that complimented the color of the dress.
